Skyfi Labs Online Challenges provide an unparalleled opportunity for students to showcase their expertise in the latest technologies. Skyfi Labs Online Challenge on Internet of Things

Skyfi Labs in association with Techkriti 2017, the annual college festival of IIT Kanpur proudly presents the Skyfi Labs Techkriti Challenge 2017 – a Skyfi Labs Online Challenge and Competition in the field of Internet of Things.

Skyfi Labs - Techkriti Challenge 2017 offers an excellent platform for students to learn, design and build Internet of Things based projects. The participants will first learn how to build an Internet of Things based Weather Monitoring Device using Raspberry Pi through the Skyfi Labs Online Project-based course. The students will then solve a challenge at the end of the course by applying their learning to build an exciting Internet of Things device relevant to real-life applications.

Format of the Competition

Step 1: Register for Skyfi Labs Internet of Things Online Project-based Course

Enroll for the Internet of Things Online Project-based Course by clicking here. Learn to build an Internet of Things weather monitoring device using the kits shipped to your place and the Online Course, which has a unique Learn-Do-Review methodology to maximize your learning.

Step 2: Solve the Skyfi Labs Online Challenge and Qualify for the Grand Finals

Finish the Online Course and apply your learning to solve the Online Challenge at the end of the course on the same technology. Submit a video of the final working project to earn a Certificate of Distinction and qualify for the Grand Finals to be conducted at Techkriti 2017 in IIT Kanpur.

Step 3: Compete in Techkriti 2017 and be crowned the Champion

Attend the Grand Finals at Techkriti 2017 in IIT Kanpur in March 2017. Compete with the other finalists from across India to solve another challenging problem statement and win exciting prizes.Roboversity IUCEE Challenge - Organize Workshop

About Techkriti

Techkriti is the annual international technical & entrepreneurship festival of IIT Kanpur and definitely the greatest exponent of exuberance and creativity of its students. Lately, Techkriti has grown into one of the biggest and the most zestful student festivals in Asia. Witnessing nearly 20,000 participants with over 1000 participants from abroad, the festival is a much-awaited event in the technical and business calendar of the student community. The participation is from almost all the prestigious colleges within country like IITs, IIMs, NITs etc

Problem Statement

In the course, you have learned how to build an IoT-based Weather Monitoring Device that sends updates about the Room Temperature and Humidity directly to your phone. The real life application of this system is to provide you regular updates about the conditions in your home.

As part of the challenge, you have to build a simple Android App to use your IoT Device to control a fan (or any electric device), which is connected to the IoT device, remotely.

The problem statement can be split into 2 primary tasks:

Task 1:Connect the Raspberry Pi to a fan (or any other electric device), that can be switched on or off by commands sent through Raspberry Pi.

Task 2: Build a simple app with a single button that can switch on/off the fan (or any electric device) connected to the Raspberry Pi whenever the room temperature is higher/lower than any pre-determined threshold temperature respectively. The app should use the Internet to control the electric device.

You are essentially building a Home Automation System using IoT. You can replace the DHT sensor with any other sensors (like Motion Sensor, Fingerprint sensor, Camera etc.) and the electric device with any other load (like AC, electronic locking system etc.) and build a sophisticated IoT-based Home Automation System.

Tips:

  • You can use MIT App Inventor to build your Android App with simple GUI based programming. Click here for more details.
  • You can add password protection to your project.

Rules of the Competition:

  • You should use only Raspberry Pi as the Microcontroller/Embedded System core for the project.
  • The communication between the phone and the IoT Device should be Internet and the final project should be operable from any place with access to internet.
