In this MATLAB project, we will model and simulate a Hybrid electric vehicle using MATLAB/Simulink and ADAMS.
Recent days air pollution has reached the maximum limit in most of the cities, the major part of the pollution is produced by the automobiles. Because automobiles burn gasoline to convert chemical energy to kinetic energy. To overcome this problem electric vehicles are introduced. Electric vehicles have an advantage of less emission or almost zero-emission when compared to the gasoline-powered vehicles. But electrical vehicles range is very less compared to gasoline/petrol vehicles. Because the battery used in electric vehicles can’t store more energy.
After the advancement in technology, the hybrid vehicles are developed which combines the advantage of both electric and gasoline vehicles. Where fuel is burnt by an ic engine to charge the battery with the help of a generator and the stored energy from the battery is used to run the vehicle. There are two hybrid systems: Parallel hybrid and Series hybrid.
Skyfi Labs gives you the easiest way to learn and build this project.
Parallel Hybrid: In this type of hybrid vehicle it utilises both the power sources simultaneously to power the vehicle. i.e., during highway driving, ic engine will power the vehicle since the vehicle speed will not vary much. Similarly, the electric power source is used for city driving ic engine is used to charge the battery. Sometimes both the sources used together to power the vehicle thus by increasing the overall efficiency.
Series Hybrid: In the series hybrid system, the ic engine powers the battery using the generator. The electrical energy is then used to power the motor which drives the vehicle. This will give more efficiency during city driving. Instead of an IC engine, the hydrogen fuel cell is also used to produce the electrical energy which converts the hybrid into a pure electric vehicle.
Types of simulation methods used:
Hardware In the Loop(HIL): HIL simulation is used while performing Model-Based Design(MBD) to test the controller. It is a real-time simulation used to test controller design and also to check whether your physical model is valid or not. While performing HIL simulation the real hardware is not required for the physical system and also no need to care about the naturalistic test setup.

Software in the Loop(SIL): It enables to test and modify the source code using your desktop by directly connecting the software to a digital plant instead of costlier systems. By doing so the bugs and errors are detected in the earlier stage which reduces the cost of later stage troubleshooting. SIL also helps to accelerate the development cycle by testing the software before the initialization of hardware prototyping phase.
Following are the steps to be followed to simulate hybrid electric vehicle design
1. Do market research and collect the data of the existing hybrid vehicles
2. Simulate the model and compare the results using the software packages:
3. Perform the comparative analysis of conventional and hybrid models such as
4. Based on the results obtained after the modelling and simulation of hybrid and conventional vehicle recommendations are provided for further improvement of the vehicle system.
